Despite having nothing to play for against Sporting Kansas City

Despite having nothing to play for against Sporting Kansas City, manager Pablo Mastroeni was pleased to see his team perform exceptionally well and get a 2-0 victory.

Colorado Rapids are bottom of the Western Conference table after having enjoyed only eight victories so far. Hence, they were not given much of a hope against Sporting, who were chasing the final sixth spot in the table. This would give them access to the play-off places at the end of the campaign. The comfortable four-point advantage that the club enjoyed over San Jose Earthquakes has been brought down to one point as result of this defeat.

Sporting Kansas City now have everything to play for in the final league match of the season against LA Galaxy.

Pablo Mastroeni is pleased to have forced his opposition into this difficult situation. He said that his players had trained exceptionally well despite having lost the ability to compete in the play-offs. This victory provides some relief to the team after they had suffered a winless run of six matches. This run also included four straight defeats. Now, Colorado Rapids have the chance to end the season on a high with a victory against Portland Timbers.

“It’s by far the best performance of the year. Coming into a place with nothing to play for as far as playoffs are concerned, the guys have been training exceptionally well. Two world class goals against a very good team that has a lot on the line speaks volumes of the type of character we have in that locker room. They’re a team that likes to press and move their lines high. The space they give you is the space behind. That was the focus of our preparation this week. All of the planning and preparation was executed perfectly tonight,” said Mastroeni.
